Learn About Microneedling

If you want younger, healthier-looking skin but aren't ready to try laser therapy, microneedling is a minimally invasive approach that uses tiny needles to boost the body's collagen production. Amy Curtis, MD, FAAD, Leena Brown, MPT, PA-C, and the experienced team at Dermatology and Aesthetics Center of Utah use microneedling to improve your complexion and reduce scarring. Make an appointment today by calling the office nearest you in Centerville or West Jordan, Utah, or requesting an appointment online.

What is microneedling?

Microneedling, or collagen induction therapy, is an innovative minimally invasive cosmetic treatment that treats skin concerns by increasing collagen production.

Microneedling utilizes tiny sterilized needles to prick the skin. This method causes only a slight injury, but enough to trigger the body to produce new, collagen-rich tissue. The new tissue looks healthier and has a more even tone and texture. Microneedling is an excellent alternative for those who have tried other anti-aging treatments or products with little success.

What are the benefits of microneedling?

After you turn 20, you stop producing collagen at a rate of around 1% less each year, which can make you more prone to skin issues. By stimulating collagen production, microneedling helps address concerns like:

  • Acne
  • Hyperpigmentation or dark spots
  • Large pores
  • Reduced skin elasticity
  • Scars
  • Stretch marks
  • Sun damage
  • Wrinkles

If you have a darker skin tone, you may respond better to microneedling than laser treatment because it doesn't affect pigmentation. Many people also favor microneedling as a less-expensive alternative to laser therapy.

What happens during a microneedling treatment?

Although the microneedling treatment itself takes only around 20-30 minutes, you should allow for at least 1-2 hours for your appointment.

Your provider starts by cleansing your face and applying a topical anesthetic, which helps reduce any discomfort. Depending on the area being treated, it may take 30-60 minutes for the anesthetic to take effect.

Once ready, your provider uses a small device to prick your skin with needles that are so tiny you can barely see the pinpricks afterward. They move the device over the treatment area for even collagen production.

What is the recovery process following a microneedling treatment?

There's minimal downtime following microneedling — if any — and you can go back to your regular activities right away.

It's normal for skin to feel tender or irritated and look red for the first few days. Keep in mind that it will be overly sensitive to the sun, so wear plenty of sunscreen.

Most people typically see results within 4-6 treatments. Your provider assesses your skin each session and creates a treatment program based on how it responds.

When you want firmer and smoother-looking skin, look no further than Dermatology and Aesthetics Center of Utah for all your microneedling treatments. Make your next appointment today by calling the practice or requesting a consultation online.
